Invention of Hugo Cabret Study Sheet #1
The story you are about to read takes place in 1931 in Paris, France. The text is well written and a delight to read. The rich illustrations take over telling the story at regular intervals. You will truly enjoy reading this great book. As we begin our adventure with Hugo Cabret, the main character of the book, you will need to do the following over the next couple of days.
1. Read Chapters 1 and 2 by next Monday, December 7th. Be ready to discuss the chapters in class.
2. Use the netbook and research the following. What were movies like in 1931? Things to consider: Was there sound? Were the movies in color? What was the quality of the movies? (Both sound and video.) Was T.V. introduced yet? If not, how would you see a movie? Write a short essay using Microsoft word on the netbooks. Once you have written your essay, e-mail it to me in an attachment using your e-pals account.
3. Use your netbook to research the following: What kind of toys would you likely find in the 1930’s? What would they look like? Name several kinds with detailed descriptions. Where would you go to get the toys? Answer these questions using Microsoft word and the netbooks. On a separate sheet of paper, draw and label a detailed picture of a toy you would find in the 1930’s.
4. In 1931, what do you think life was like for children? Research the information above using the netbooks. Using kidspiration, make a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the life of children in 1931 to your life today. What were some of the things you might have that they don’t? What are things that have stayed the same since the 30’s? How is it different now?
5. Go to Google Earth and find Paris, France.
